Katrin Valgemäe

Katrin Valgemäe (born 1979) is an artist living and working in Tallinn. Valgemäe studied painting and ceramics at Estonian Academy of Arts and furthered her skills at the painting department of Art Academy of Latvia.

Valgemäe’s works are somehow irrational, not in technique, but in psychological way. At first sight, they are beautiful, decorative and well painted, but after a while, more layers reveal the intriguing underlying storylines. The figures depicted, often classical beauties, seem to embody both attractiveness and grotesque features, creating a sense of tension and ambiguity for the viewer. The technical skill and sensuousness of the figures adds to this complexity, as the viewer is drawn in by the beauty of the work while also feeling a sense of unease or repulsion. With this, the artist invites the viewer to dig deeper and consider the hidden meanings and layers that lie beneath the surface of her art. Still, there are answers and viewers can find them themselves.

Enhancing classical painting techniques with elements of pop art, kitsch, and camp, Katrin Valgemäe’s subtly grotesque pinup product series takes inspiration from the media’s exaggerated self-centeredness, revealing various layers with intriguing narratives upon closer examination.

“The inspiration is coming from Francisco de Goya’s painting “Still Life with Golden Bream” (1808-1812). I wanted to capture the physical beauty of the fish the same way, but to paint the subject with Renaissance portrait characteristics, just as a people were portrayed: in the centre of the painting, painted in realism, in their natural form, with a plain dark background. To have a portrait painted meant you had to have a high social status. This carnivore had that, but the food chain continues with another carnivores’ feast.”

The idea for this painting came from the artists own life. “It is my allegorical self-portrait. The kitchen is the epicentre of my home. It’s a place where I spend most of my time. Whether it is caring for my small child, cooking, or doing other chores, everything happens in the kitchen. I also paint in the kitchen. Additionally, there is a hint of influence from Richard Hamilton, from his (1956) collage “Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?” I tried to capture the satire of my “well” organised everyday life, the parodical stretch of the overwhelming illusion – always trying to be everything to everybody and nothing less.”
