Interview with Sabine Spurina from Family-SCL

Who are the founders and team members? Can you share a little about your background and how you came together to start the brand?

Family-SCL began with a beautiful coincidence and a shared dream. When two close friends, Kaspars and Modris, both welcomed baby daughters into their families at the same time, they found themselves facing the same challenge: finding functional, safe furniture that would truly support their children's development. Rather than settling for what was available, they decided to create the first pieces themselves - crafting functional furniture designed specifically for their little ones.

When these handmade pieces were complete, something wonderful happened. Other friends with young children saw what they had created and expressed their own desire for such thoughtful, well-made furniture. It was then that the two friends realized they had discovered something special- other families wanted these pieces too. What started as a labor of love for their own daughters slowly grew as they began creating furniture for friends, then friends of friends.

Today, that small beginning has blossomed into a dedicated workshop where approximately 10 craftspeople- all close to our founding families - work together. We continue to design and handcraft each piece with the same meticulous attention to detail that went into those very first creations, combining uncompromising safety standards with exceptional craftsmanship and the fundamental belief that children learn best through hands-on experience.

Could you walk us through how a learning tower (or another product) goes from idea to finished piece in your workshop?

Consider our signature learning tower. It starts with a simple yet profound wish- creating a safe way for children to climb up, observe their world, and actively participate in family life. From that initial concept, every detail becomes crucial: we carefully select sturdy, sustainable wood, smooth every edge to perfection, and rigorously test each piece for safety and durability. The finished product transcends mere furniture- it becomes the essential tool that empowers a child to wash their own hands, help prepare family meals, or observe and absorb new skills while standing proudly beside you.

Is there something surprising or little-known about Family-SCL or your products that most people wouldn’t guess?

Because each item is lovingly handmade, no two pieces are exactly alike. Each carries its own distinct character, much like the unique children who will use them. Our furniture is thoughtfully designed to foster independence, ignite natural curiosity, and adapt alongside your child as they grow and develop.

Do you have a favorite story or piece of feedback from parents or kids using your products?

One parent shared with us: "My little one climbs into the tower every morning to brush their teeth and help with breakfast. It's incredible to witness how proud and confident they've become doing things independently." This sense of accomplishment and pure joy - that's the inspiration that drives everything we do.

What’s next for Family-SCL, any new designs, goals, or dreams you’re excited to share?

We're continuously sketching new designs with one unwavering goal: to simplify everyday life for children while nurturing their natural desire to learn and grow. Throughout this journey of innovation and creativity, our guiding compass remains constant: Support, Care, and Love.
