The importance of traffic can’t be underestimated—if no one visits your store, it doesn’t matter how nice it looks or how great your products are. That’s why we’ve created a very simple guide for new online stores on what to focus on.
𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰
𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝘀
• You can start driving traffic in just 15 minutes (faster is better).
• Platforms: Meta/Facebook, Google, TikTok, Reddit.
• Choose two platforms, and at least one should be Meta.
• Set your objective to sales or, even better, ROAS (return on ad spend).
𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮
• Platforms: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok.
• Pick 1-2 platforms and focus on doing them well.
• Test different types of content like UGC, videos, giveaways, jokes, reviews, or movie references to find what works best. Try bold stuff and don’t be generic (most are)!
𝗘𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
• Start collecting emails right away (use Klaviyo, Shopify Email, etc.).
• Pop-ups with real value work best—offer at least 10% off or free shipping.
• Set up a welcome flow that includes a discount code.
• Send at least one newsletter per week.
𝗦𝗘𝗢
• Only invest time in SEO if you know what you’re doing. Otherwise, skip it at the start—except for making sure you have proper titles and meta descriptions for your most important pages (e.g., front page, category pages).
𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺𝘀 & 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀
• Find forums, Facebook groups, subreddits, or Discord channels where your target customers spend time. Example: If you sell outdoor gear, join hiking forums. If you sell children’s products, find groups for parents.
𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
• Find 1-2 micro-influencers whose followers match your ideal customer profile.
• Offer a 3-6 month deal with free products or store credit.
• Provide them with a discount code to share and also ask for permission to use their content on your own channels.
𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 & 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀
These strategies may not scale, but they might help. Most importantly, they’re usually cost-efficient and fun to do. Here are some examples:
• Stickers on street poles or in local hotspots.
• Handing out flyers.
• Putting up posters.
• Leaving branded umbrellas at cafes (a bit extreme, but one store did this).
• Trying to get featured in local media (e.g., podcasts, radio shows, newspapers, or TV shows).
• Setting public computers (e.g., in libraries or Apple Stores) to display your store’s homepage.
𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
• If you’re not experienced or have a small budget, don’t target the whole world or all of Europe.
• Choose one market, like a specific country or even a city, and focus your efforts there.
𝗖𝗼𝗽𝘆 & 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁
• Try different (bold) ideas and be unique, whether it’s for ads, emails, or social media. It’s hard to sell awesome products with mediocre copy and content.
And use Google Analytics to understand which channels work best. And if you’re wondering why there’s an image of pizza, Coke, and the ocean in the Dominican Republic—it’s because this is how it feels when you’ve got traffic channels properly working for your online store. 🍕🥤🌊
